Do Government Services Attract Business?
Can the AFT actually believe that higher taxes attract business?
The pointy-headed intellectuals are giving me a good laugh again. The source of my mirth is the never ending supply of money the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) is pumping into radio ads. These people actually believe that businesses don't mind the heavy taxes of that land that logic forgot (the Washington DC metro area) and want to move here to take advantage of all of the services these high taxes provide.
Now, I realize that the schools are a virtual monopoly funded through multiple layers of ever increasing taxation, so the AFT does not have any direct experience with a market economy. That being the case, here is a more rational explanation. Government is a recession proof business.
Even when the rest of us are putting on a sweater, packing lunch, and car-pooling to keep the bank balance from going below zero, governments at all levels keep right on spending. In fact, they have a built in increase in sales year after year. That is why businesses find government to be the ideal customer. They never go broke. They just raise taxes or print more money. So while businesses hate the taxes, they will put up with them knowing that taking advantage of government spending is like shooting fish in a barrel.
